| Information for Students |
We are hoping you find the information inside this leaflet of use to you during your stay….
The FAR would like to welcome you to the street and hope that you will enjoy your stay here. We all enjoy living in this street which we see as being one of those at the heart of Jesmond. We like Jesmond because of its varied and lively sense of community and the different facilities and groups that there are .
FARG is a community group formed in 2005 by residents living in Fern Avenue, Jesmond . It welcomes membership from any residents in the street whether they are short term or long term. There is a small steering group which helps run the group. We also liaise with local Councillors by representing the views of the residents.
Broadly the aims of FARG are to stimulate a sense of community in the street whilst trying to ensure that the street is a good place to live in terms of quality of life and a sense of belonging. We try to be inclusive, facilitative and open in our approach. We try to do this by arranging very occasional social events, encouraging communications between all residents and generally sharing views, information, and suggestions for action in relation to improving the environment .
We also try to keep residents up to date on community issues by arranging a small number of meetings, with leaflets, and our own evolving website. If you wish to be kept informed of FARG activity you can contact us though the website
History
Fern Avenue was mainly built at the end of the 19C and beginning of the 20C. There was a large Manor House nearby, hence the name Manor House Road . Much of the land was owned by the Burdon Sanderson family. The eastern end of Fern Avenue (towards Manor House Road ) was once the site of a coal mine. Interesting old Ordnanace Survey maps are available from the library charting the building development (Jesmond 1895 and Jesmond 1914 editions). “An Account of Jesmond” by Frederick Walter Dendy published in 1904 gives a comprehensive early history.
Wheelie Bins
these are collected weekly on Tuesday mornings. This can vary on public holidays . To request a new wheeled bin please contact Envirocall. 0191 274 4000. Bins should be put out on the Monday evening and taken in after the refuse collection to prevent misuse and assist residents park their cars in their garages. Burglars have been known to use bins to climb back walls.
Black bin bags and rubbish outside bins will not be taken away unless a special arrangement is made by ringing Envirocall who are very helpful 0191 274 4000.
Back lanes
these are well used for access to the rear of properties, for children playing and for residents to park cars in garages. It is a real help if residents take their wheelie bins into their properties when they are not in use. Back lanes can be used to break into properties and to garages if they are not secured properly.
Trees and bushes, gardens
Fern Avenue is well served by trees, bushes and gardens giving real character to the street. There are an unusually high number of trees protected by preservation orders .
Parking
there is pressure on parking generally in Jesmond including Fern Avenue. Within 12 months it is anticipated that there will be a formal parking scheme in the street with parking restricted to residents at certain times of the day. Permits will be available from the Council.

Acorn Road/St Georges Terrace, 6-7 minutes away, is the main shopping area. However there are also good local “corner shops” with long opening hours in Holly Avenue, Manor House Road and at the bottom of Shortridge Terrace.

However only some parts of the routes past Jesmond Church , via Brandling Terrace or Leazes Park are marked cycle routes. You can be in the main shopping street Northumberland Street in less than 10 minutes, where there are cycle racks.
Walking
Jesmond Dene which is nearby was built by Lord Armstong in Victorian times and is a splendid place to walk , There’s a small childrens zoo and a café. You can walk into the city centre in 20-25 minutes or to St James’ Park on match days in 25 minutes through Leazes Park.
